12 Days of Christmas - Day 4 - Hygge for the Holidays

Writer's picture: Dayle SheehanDayle Sheehan

Study's show that Scandanavian countries rank the highest for happiness despite their cold, long and very dark winters. A huge reason for this is a practice they call Hygge.

Do you know that moment when you are fully present, and have a wave of happiness, joy, gratefulness, contentment to peace wave over you? Those are moments of Hygge. It is not the act of buying something or eating something or doing one particular thing. It is a state of consciousness that contentment is the primary feeling. Other ways to describe Hygge are coziness, charm, happiness, ‘contentness’, security, familiarity, comfort, reassurance, kinship, and simpleness. Finding joy in moments of simpleness is the quickest route to joy!

Ways to find moments of Hygge in your day will vary for everyone but here are some that bring me complete joy and contentment.

Drinking Your Favourite Cup of Coffee from a Beautiful Cup Every Morning

Waking up early to have the house to yourself before the busyness of the day begins

Journalling

Gathering with Friends

Lighting a candle every night at dinner

Snuggling on the couch with a soft blanket

Crawling into bed with the perfect clean linens

Wearing clothes that make you feel great and bring you joy!

Hygge is being aware of the good moments everyday! It is a practice of mindfulness that will change the way you look at the world and heighten your gratefulness for life's small pleasures. In the end, it's the stuff that really matters!

Thank you so much for being here and reading every day! It means the world to me! I'll be back tomorrow with my favourite homemade fudge recipe that is so easy and makes the perfect gift or holiday treat!
